The PlayStation 2 which is officially branded as PS2 is a home video game console manufactured and marketed by Sony Computer Entertainment. Its very first release was in Japan on March 4, 2000, followed North America on October 26, 2000, and then in Europe and Australia on November 24, 2000. It is the successor to the original PlayStation and marks the second installment in the PlayStation console line-up. It is a sixth-generation console which it competed with Nintendo's GameCube, Microsoft's original Xbox and Sega's Dreamcast. The PS2 offered backwards compatibility for its predecessor's Dual Shock controller and along with it were launched its games. The console's production and release was announced in 1999 and it has been the best-selling video game console of all time, having sold over 155 million units worldwide, as confirmed by Sony. The PS2 had over 3,800 game titles released for itself, with over 1.5 billion copies sold. Sony later manufactured several lighter and compact revisions of the console which were known as “Slimline” models in 2004. Despite the release of its successor, the PlayStation 3, the PS2 prevailed well with its sublimity into the seventh generation and continued to be produced until 2013, when Sony finally declared that it had been discontinued after twelve years of production, marking one of the longest life spans of a video game console. New games for the console continued to be produced until the end of 2013 such as Final Fantasy XI: Seekers of Adoulin for Japan, FIFA 13 for North America, and Pro Evolution Soccer 2014 for Europe, despite the announcement of its discontinuation.
