Owls are birds that belong to the order Strigiformes which includes about 200 species of mostly solitary and nocturnal birds of prey typified by an upright stance, a large and broad head, sharp talons, binocular vision, binaural hearing and feathers adapted for silent flight. However, there are some exceptions such as the diurnal northern hawk-owl and the gregarious burrowing owl. Owls mostly hunt small mammals, insects, and other birds, albeit, a few species specialize in hunting fish as well. They are found in almost all the regions of the Earth except polar ice caps and some remote islands. Owls are divided into the following two families - the true (or typical) owl family called Strigidae and the barn-owl family called Tytonidae. Owls possess large, forward-facing eyes and ear-holes, a flat face, a hawk-like beak, and usually a conspicuous circle of feathers along with a facial disc around each eye. The feathers making up this disc can be adjusted so as to sharply focus sounds from varying distances onto the owls' ear cavities which are placed asymmetrically. Most prey hunting bird have eyes on the sides of their heads, however, the stereoscopic nature of the owl's forward-facing eyes permits them a greater sense of depth perception necessary for low-light hunting. Despite owls having a binocular vision, their large eyes are fixed in their sockets, as are those of most other birds, thus, they must turn their entire heads to change their views. Since owls are farsighted, hence, they are unable to clearly see anything within a few centimeters of their eyes.
