Christmas bells tradition goes back to a long time. The bells, especially church bells have been associated with Christmas since the very start. The bells are run to signal the start of services in the church. The service in the Anglican and Catholic churches begun after the sunset. The service after the sunset is known to be the first service. The service after the sunset on Christmas Eve is said to be the first service of the Christmas Day and a bell is rung to signal that. Some churches in the UK also have the tradition of ringing the largest bell four times in the hour before midnight and all the bells are rung at midnight in celebrations. In the Catholic Churches the mass can only be held at midnight on precisely two occasions i.e. Christmas and Easter. At both of these midnight masses it is tradition to ring the church, sometimes alter bells too, when the priest says Gloria (Gloria in excelsis in Duo).
In Victorian Times it was very popular to sing carols along with the tunes of handbells, sometimes it would even go only with bells and no singing. The ringing of the handbell is still popular today. Christmas bells, artificial christmas bells, and paper cut bells are also used for Christmas decorations, sometimes these are also pinned on the Christmas Tree.
