Pogonas are a kind of lizard and are a genus of reptiles containing eight or arguably, nine lizard species which are often known by the common name 'bearded dragons'. The name "bearded dragon" refers to the "beard" of the dragon which is the underside of the throat that can turn black for a number of reasons, most often as a result of stress. They spend a significant amount of time on branches and bushes and in the human habitats as well and are thus made into adept climbers. Pogona species bask on branches and rocks in the mornings and afternoons. They are found abundantly in Australia in a wide range of habitats such as deserts, shrublands and Eucalyptus woodlands. Several species of the genus pogon are kept as pets, especially the central bearded dragon. They are also be exhibited in zoos due to easy care in comparison to other exotic reptiles and their hardy nature.
Bearded dragons have been found to be primitively bred in deserts in Australia, with the various species occupying slightly overlapping areas of the landmass. They live in the arid and subtropical woodlands, savannas, scrublands, into the great interior deserts and around the shore areas. Their range extends throughout the interior of the eastern states and to the eastern half of South Australia and southeastern Northern Territory. This is also connotes their dominant behaviour and competition for their territory or basking areas.
